Hadith 1591

´It was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) passed by some women of ‘Abdul-Ashhal who were weeping for their slain on the Day of Uhud. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:` “But there is no one to weep for Hamzah.” So the women of Ansar started to weep for Hamzah. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) woke up and said, ‘Woe to them, have they not gone home yet? Tell them to go home and not to weep for anyone who dies after this day.’”

Benefits and Issues:

Hazrat Hamzah radi Allahu anhu was martyred in the Battle of Uhud. The women of his household had not yet migrated to Madinah. Therefore, the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, out of compassion, said that there is no one to weep for Hamzah. The purpose of this statement was not to praise the act of wailing, but rather to express their helplessness—that at this moment, even his family members are not present, those who naturally would feel the greatest grief.

The noble Companions radi Allahu anhum were those who would sacrifice themselves at the mere indication of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. Such was the perfection of their love that when the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said something from which they sensed that he wished for Hazrat Hamzah radi Allahu anhu to be wept for, their women immediately prepared themselves and came. For them, the sorrow of the Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam was more distressing than their own grief and sadness; thus, due to this grief, they began to weep aloud.

The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam made it clear that this was not his intention. Therefore, he ordered those women to return.

It is prohibited to gather at the house of the deceased and to wail and lament. In fact, even gathering at the house of the deceased without wailing is prohibited. See: (Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith No: 1612). Whoever comes for condolence should offer their condolences and then leave.
