Hadith 1587

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (ﷺ) was attending a funeral. ‘Umar saw a woman and shouted at her, but the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Leave her alone, O ‘Umar, for the eye weeps and the heart is afflicted, and the bereavement is recent.”

Brief Explanation
1؎: That is, she had just suffered the shock, and at such a time the heart is greatly affected and much weeping occurs; a person becomes compelled, especially women, whose hearts are very weak. Apparently, it seems that this woman wept with sound, but not with a loud voice. Even then, Umar radi Allahu anhu forbade her so that the door to lamentation (niyahah), which is prohibited, could be closed. And the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam himself wept at the death of his son Ibrahim and said: "The eye sheds tears, and the heart grieves, but we do not say with our tongue that which would anger our Lord." And Imam Ahmad has narrated from Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhuma that when the Prophet’s sallallahu alayhi wa sallam daughter Zaynab passed away, the women began to weep. Umar al-Faruq radi Allahu anhu began to strike them with a whip, but the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam pushed him back with his hand and said: "Umar, stop!" Then he said: "Women! Beware of the voice of Shaytan..." until the end of the hadith.

1860. Commentary: Benefit: The chain of transmission (isnad) of the aforementioned narration is weak, but the issue mentioned in the hadith is correct based on other authentic evidences: that the crying which naturally occurs due to shock is permissible; it does not fall under the category of the prohibited type of crying. Allamah Atiyyubi, while explaining the aforementioned hadith, has mentioned its supporting evidences and has conducted a very fine discussion. Benefit:
It is established from this hadith that merely weeping over the deceased is not a sin, and it is also proven that women have tender hearts. If they are only weeping and not wailing, then they should not be prevented. However, if they engage in screaming, wailing, or commit prohibited acts, then they should be stopped.
