بَابٌ في النَّهْيِ عَنِ النِّيَاحَةِChapter: What was narrated concerning the prohibition of wailing

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ رَاشِدٍ الْيَمَامِيُّ ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ ، عَنِ عِكْرِمَةَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " النِّيَاحَةُ عَلَى الْمَيِّتِ مِنْ أَمْرِ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ ، فَإِنَّ النَّائِحَةَ إِنْ لَمْ تَتُبْ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَمُوتَ ، فَإِنَّهَا تُبْعَثُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عَلَيْهَا سَرَابِيلُ مِنْ قَطِرَانٍ ، ثُمَّ يُعْلَى عَلَيْهَا بِدِرُوعٍ مِنْ لَهَبِ النَّارِ " .
´It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:` “Wailing over the dead is one of the affairs of the Days of Ignorance and if the woman who wails does not repent before she dies, she will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection wearing a shirt of pitch (tar), over which she will wear a shirt of flaming fire.”

This ruling is not specific to women; rather, if a man commits this offense, he will also receive the same punishment on the Day of Resurrection.
The mention of women in the hadith is because, among the Arabs, it was the women who would perform lamentation (niyahah).
The Prophetic statement (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is:
"Whoever strikes his cheeks, tears his collar, and calls out with the call of the Age of Ignorance (performs lamentation), he is not from among us." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Funerals, Chapter: He is not from us who strikes the cheeks, Hadith: 1297; Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith: 1584)
Men are also included in this.
