The verse alluded to in this hadith is as follows:
“O Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)! When believing women come to you to give you the pledge that they will not associate anything with Allah, nor will they steal, nor will they commit adultery, nor will they kill their children, nor will they bring any slander they have invented between their hands and feet, nor will they disobey you in what is right, then accept their pledge and ask Allah to forgive them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.”

The meaning of the hadith is that refraining from wailing (niyahah) is also included among those righteous deeds, the fulfillment of which Muslim women promised to the Prophet of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

By niyahah (wailing) is meant mentioning the virtues of the deceased and, in expressing one’s grief, weeping in such a manner. This was considered an expression of love for the deceased. Islam has strictly prohibited this wrongful custom. Only shedding tears from the eyes is permissible, or uttering a phrase or two, provided it is not in the manner of wailing, then that is permissible. When the son of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), Ibrahim (alayhis salam), passed away, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was tearful. ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf (radi Allahu anhu) was surprised, so the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) clarified, saying: “The eyes shed tears, the heart grieves, but we will only say that which pleases Allah. O Ibrahim! We are indeed saddened by your separation.”
