Brief Explanation
1؎: From this and other hadiths of similar meaning, it is strongly indicated that women are prohibited from visiting graves. In this hadith, the word "zawwarat" is in the intensive form, therefore, the general permission for women to visit graves is derived from the earlier (hadith number 1571), in which the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) granted a general permission for Muslims to visit graves after previously prohibiting it, so that they may take admonition and lesson from it. Women, too, are in need of and deserving of taking admonition and lesson from this, just like men. There are several hadiths in this regard:
1- It is narrated from Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (radi Allahu anha) that the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) permitted women to visit graves. (Sunan al-Athram and al-Mustadrak al-Hakim)
2- In Sahih Muslim, it is narrated from Umm al-Mu’minin Aisha (radi Allahu anha) that she said: O Messenger of Allah! What should I say when I visit graves? He (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: Say «السلام على أهل الديار من المؤمنين».
3- Al-Hakim has narrated that Fatimah al-Zahra (radi Allahu anha) used to visit the grave of her uncle Hamzah (radi Allahu anhu) every Friday.
4- In Sahih al-Bukhari, it is mentioned that the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) passed by a woman who was weeping at a grave, but he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not object to her for visiting the grave.
The reconciliation between permission and prohibition can be understood as follows: prohibition is for those women who are excessive in visiting, or who engage in wailing and the like during the visit, and permission is for those women who do not commit acts contrary to the Shariah. Al-Qurtubi said that the curse is specific to those women who visit excessively, because in the hadith the word "zawwarat al-qubur" is in the intensive form, and perhaps the reason for this is that when a woman visits frequently, it causes disruption in the tasks and needs of men.
