´It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said:` “When the Prophet (ﷺ) died, there was a man in Al-Madinah who used to make a niche in the grave and another who used to dig graves without a niche. They said: ‘Let us pray Istikharah to our Lord and call for them both, and whichever of them comes first, we will let him do it.’ So they were both sent for, and the one who used to make the niche-grave came first, so they made a niche-grave for the Prophet (ﷺ).”

Benefits and Issues:
➊
The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in) considered both types of graves to be permissible.
That is why both were called.
And these two individuals used to prepare graves in their respective manners even during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) for those who passed away.
If either of these methods had been prohibited,
then the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would have forbidden it.
For example, he would have instructed the one who made the box-shaped (shaqq) grave to henceforth make the side niche (lahd) grave.
➋
The side niche (lahd) grave is the original, because Allah, the Exalted, chose this style of grave for His Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
