´It was narrated that Abu Rafi’ said:` “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) placed Sa’d gently in his grave and sprinkled water on it.”
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefit:
The aforementioned narration is weak in its chain of transmission.
However, regarding this issue, there is a narration reported in Sunan Abi Dawud which has been declared authentic by the scholars.
In it, it is mentioned that Harith al-A‘war made a bequest that Abdullah bin Yazid al-Khatmi radi Allahu anhu should lead his funeral prayer.
Accordingly, he led the funeral prayer, then lowered him into the grave from the foot side and said, “This is the Sunnah.” (Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Funerals, Chapter: How the deceased is entered into the grave, Hadith: 3211)
Imam Bayhaqi rahimahullah, Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah, and Shaykh Ali Zai have declared it authentic.
Furthermore, when a Companion refers to an action as Sunnah, what is meant is the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
And in technical terms, this is called “marfu‘ hukman” (attributed to the Prophet by ruling).
Also, we have not found any mention of sprinkling water in any authentic hadith.
And Allah knows best.
