Hadith 1528

´Kharijah bin Zaid bin Thabit narrated that Yazid bin Thabit, who was older than Zaid, said:` “We went out with the Prophet (ﷺ) and when we reached Al-Baqi’, we saw a new grave. He asked about it and they said: ‘(It is) so-and-so (a woman).’ He recognized the name and said: ‘Why did you not tell me about her?’ They said: ‘You were taking a nap and you were fasting, and we did not like to disturb you.’ He said: ‘Do not do that; I do not want to see it happen again that one of you dies, while I am still among you, and you do not tell me, for my prayer for him is a mercy.’ Then he went to the grave and we lined up in rows behind him, and he said four Takbir (i.e. for the funeral prayer).”

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to look after all his Companions, even if someone appeared to be of seemingly minor status. A leader and head should have such a relationship with his workers.

➋ The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in) considered the comfort of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and did not deem it appropriate to cause him any inconvenience. The young should likewise be considerate of their elders.

➌ The method of performing the funeral prayer (janazah) at the grave is the same as the method of performing the funeral prayer before burial.

If a deceased person is buried without the funeral prayer (janazah) having been performed, then in this case, performing the funeral prayer at the grave is an issue upon which there is consensus. However, performing the funeral prayer at the grave for a deceased person who was buried along with the funeral prayer is a matter of scholarly disagreement. This hadith is evidence for its permissibility. Those who hold the view of impermissibility consider this to be something specific to the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, but every action of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is evidence for its general legislation unless there is evidence for specification, and here there is no evidence for specification. Furthermore, the Companions standing alongside him goes against the idea of specification, although it can be said that the Companions stood by way of following him. In any case, permissibility is established. For further details, see hadith: 1971.
