Hadith 1513

´It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbas said:` “They (the martyrs) were brought to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) on the Day of Uhud, and he started to offer the funeral prayer for them, ten by ten. Hamzah lay where he lay, and they were taken away but he was left where he was.”

Benefits and Issues:

The martyr who attains martyrdom in battle against the disbelievers is not given a ritual bath (ghusl), even if a ritual bath was obligatory upon him due to major ritual impurity (janabah). Rather, he is to be buried in his battle clothes as commanded. This is as occurred in the Battle of Uhud with Hazrat Hamzah radi Allahu anhu and Hazrat Hanzalah radi Allahu anhu, who were in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah) before the battle, and then were martyred in the battle. The Noble Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ordered that they be buried without a ritual bath (ghusl). Then he said: I saw that the angels were giving them a ritual bath (ghusl). See: (al-Tabarani, 11/391, Hadith: 12094). Other martyrs were also buried without being given a ritual bath (ghusl). See: (Ahkam al-Jana'iz by al-Albani, p. 74).

Regarding the funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) for the martyr of the battlefield, the scholars have two opinions. Imam Ibn Qayyim rahimahullah states: The correct view regarding the funeral prayer for the martyr of the battlefield is that both performing it and not performing it are permissible, because there is evidence for both positions. Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah, after mentioning the evidences, states: Performing the funeral prayer for the martyr of the battlefield is not obligatory, but it is preferable, because the funeral prayer is supplication and worship. For details, see: (Ahkam al-Jana'iz, p. 106).
