´It was narrated that 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud said:` "The first people to declare their Islam publicly were seven: The Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr, 'Ammar and his mother Sumayyah, Suhaib, Bilal and Miqdad. With regard to the Messenger of Allah, Allah protected him through his paternal uncle Abu Talib. With regard to Abu Bakr, Allah protected him through his people. As for the rest, the idolators seized them and made them wear coats of chain-mail and exposed them to the intense heat of the sun. There was none of them who did not do what they wanted them to do, except for Bilal. He did not care what happened to him for the sake of Allah, and his people did not care what happened to him. Then they gave him to the children who took him around in the streets of Makkah while he was saying, 'Ahad, Ahad (One, One).'"

Commentary:
(1)
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu also had to endure physical hardships. However, the hardships borne by the aforementioned noble Companions radi Allahu anhum were extremely severe. Abu Talib held an honorable position among the people of Makkah, so many refrained from harming the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam out of respect for Abu Talib. Similarly, Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu was also spared due to consideration for his tribe. This does not mean that they were not subjected to any physical harm at all; rather, Bilal radi Allahu anhu and others were subjected to extreme torment.
(2)
Whatever the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum said verbally in agreement with the polytheists did not diminish their status or rank, because in such situations, when afflictions become unbearable, the Qur’an itself has permitted uttering a word of disbelief to save one’s life. (See: Surah An-Nahl: 106)
(3)
From this, the steadfastness and greatness of Bilal radi Allahu anhu becomes evident, as he continued to choose the path of resolve (azimah) instead of concession (rukhsah), and never uttered a single word according to their wishes, even once. The torments inflicted upon Bilal radi Allahu anhu were so severe that merely imagining them makes one’s hair stand on end.
