Benefits and Issues:

The primary purpose of the funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) is to supplicate for the forgiveness of the deceased, and sincerity of heart is a condition for the acceptance of supplication. Therefore, every Muslim should memorize the supplications of the funeral prayer. Three of these supplications are mentioned ahead.

Some people have understood from this hadith that it is prescribed to make supplication collectively after the funeral prayer. This is a misunderstanding. Because there is no narration in any hadith that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) made supplication after the funeral prayer. However, it is Sunnah to supplicate for the steadfastness of the deceased after burying the deceased. (Sunan Abi Dawud, Book of Funerals, Chapter: Seeking forgiveness at the grave for the deceased at the time of departure, Hadith: 3221)

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Those who perform the funeral prayer (salat al-janazah) are, in reality, interceding before the Lord of the Universe for the forgiveness of the deceased. Every intercessor desires that his intercession be accepted; therefore, the one who intercedes does so with great lamentation and heartfelt pain.
➋ This is the deceased’s final moment, so one should supplicate for him with as much sincerity of heart as possible. However, some people merely fulfill the ritual, and sincerity is rarely seen; they finish the funeral prayer in just a minute or two.
