Hadith 1480

´It was narrated that Thawban, the freed slave of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), said:` “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saw some people riding on their animals in a funeral (procession). He said: ‘Do you not feel ashamed that the angels of Allah are walking on foot and you are riding?’”

Benefit:
The three aforementioned narrations are weak.
Therefore, no issue can be established based on them.
It is neither necessary to shoulder all four corners of the bier one by one, nor is there any objection to participating in the funeral procession while riding on a mount.
However, in the case of being on a mount, it is better to proceed behind the funeral.
Nevertheless, upon returning, this restriction is automatically lifted.

Explanation: 1؎ :

This hadith indicates the dislike (karahah) of following a funeral procession while riding. The narration of Mughira ibn Shu’bah radi Allahu anhu is apparently contrary to this, in which it is stated that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “The rider proceeds behind the funeral, and the one walking may walk behind it, in front of it, to its right, or to its left, close to it.” That is, a person riding follows the funeral from behind, while the one walking may walk behind it, in front of it, to its right, or to its left, staying close to it.

There are several ways to reconcile these two narrations: one is that the narration of Thawban is weak; another is that it pertains to someone who is not excused (i.e., not having an excuse), while the narration of Mughira ibn Shu’bah pertains to an excused person; thirdly, in the narration of Thawban, it is not mentioned that he was riding behind the funeral—perhaps he was ahead of the funeral or beside it. In that case, it would not contradict the hadith of Mughira.

Note:

(In the chain of narration, Abu Bakr ibn Abi Maryam is weak.)
