Hadith 1455

´It was narrated from Shaddad bin Aws that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:` “When you come to your dead ones, close their eyes, for the sight follows the soul. And say good things, for the Angels say Amin to what the members of the household say.”

Benefits and Issues:

The mentioned narration has been declared weak in its chain of transmission by our esteemed researcher. Furthermore, he writes that the previous hadith suffices in this regard. Other researchers have also declared it authentic. For details, see: (al-Mawsu‘ah al-Hadithiyyah, Musnad al-Imam Ahmad: 360/28). Therefore, despite the mentioned narration being weak in its chain, due to other supporting evidences, it is acceptable for practice and as proof.

After death, one should mention the deceased in a good manner and supplicate for their well-being. For example, one should say: May Allah have mercy on him. May He forgive him. May Allah grant him Paradise. One should refrain from making inappropriate remarks about the deceased or mentioning their faults. Similarly, one should say good things about the bereaved family. For example: May Allah grant you patience. May Allah help you all. As has been mentioned in Hadith 447 and its benefits.
