´It was narrated from Tufail bin Ubayy bin Ka’b that his father said:` “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to pray facing the trunk of a date- palm tree when the mosque was still a hut, and he used to deliver the sermon leaning on that trunk. A man from among his Companions said: ‘Would you like us to make you something upon which you can stand on Fridays so that the people will be able to see you and hear your sermon?’ He said: ‘Yes.’ So he made three steps for him, as a pulpit. When they put the pulpit in place, they put it in the place where it stands now. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) wanted to stand on the pulpit, he passed by the tree trunk from which he used to deliver the sermon, and when he went beyond the trunk, it moaned and split and cracked. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came down when he heard the voice of the trunk, and rubbed it with his hand until it fell silent. Then he went back to the pulpit and when he prayed, he prayed facing it. When the mosque was knocked down (for renovation) and (the pillars, etc.) were changed, Ubayy bin Ka’b took that trunk and kept it in his house until it became very old and the termites consumed it and it became grains of dust.”

Benefits and Issues:
➊ Delivering the sermon while standing is Sunnah.
➋ The sermon should be delivered on the pulpit (minbar).
➌ Carpentry is a permissible profession.
➍ In some narrations, it is mentioned that the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to an Ansari woman that she should have her slave make a pulpit, and she had it made. It is possible that initially a man suggested this idea, and after that, the slave was told to make it, and later the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) himself reminded the Ansari woman. And Allah knows best.
➎ The imam and leader should accept the good opinion or suggestion of their followers.
➏ When the pulpit was first made, it had three steps. After the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), more steps were added below it, making it higher.
➐ Apparently inanimate objects also possess consciousness and feeling, but we cannot perceive it.
➑ The crying of the date-palm trunk with such a sound that everyone heard it is a miracle.
➒ It is permissible to keep items related to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) as a means of seeking blessing (tabarruk), provided that the authenticity of this attribution is certain.
➓ The aforementioned narration has been declared weak in chain (sanadan da'if) by our esteemed researcher. However, other scholars, such as Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah, have graded it hasan, and the researchers of al-Mawsu'ah al-Hadithiyyah have graded it sahih li ghayrihi. They have also written in detail regarding this narration; see: (al-Mawsu'ah al-Hadithiyyah, Musnad al-Imam Ahmad: 35/171, 172). Therefore, despite the aforementioned narration being weak in chain, it is still actionable and a valid proof.
