´It was narrated from ‘Asim bin Sufyan Thaqafi that they went on the campaign of Salasil, but no battle took place; they only took up their positions. Then they came back to Mu’awiyah, and Abu Ayyub and ‘Uqbah bin ‘Amir were with him. ‘Asim said:` “O Abu Ayyub, we have missed out on Jihad this year, and we were told that whoever prays in the four mosques will be forgiven his sins.” He said: “O son of my brother, shall I not tell you of something easier than that? I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘Whoever performs ablution as he has been commanded, and prays as he has been commanded, will be forgiven his previous (bad) deeds.’” He said: “(Did he not say it) like that, O ‘Uqbah?” He said: “Yes.”
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊
One expedition, Dhat al-Salasil, took place in 8 AH before the conquest of Makkah.
This is a different battle which is also famous by the name Dhat al-Salasil.
It occurred during the time of Muawiyah radi Allahu anhu.
➋
The meaning of "Salasil" is a series of sand dunes.
Both these battles became known as Dhat al-Salasil because they took place in desert regions.
➌
The fact that Asim radi Allahu anhu did not participate in the battle was not a sin.
Because in every jihad, some people participate and some stay behind for emergencies, or to participate in another battle, or to fulfill other duties.
In this battle, Asim radi Allahu anhu staying behind perhaps happened due to some shortcoming on his part,
that despite having the intention, he was unable to participate.
That is why he counted it as a sin for himself.
➍
By the four mosques is meant: Masjid al-Haram, the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid Nabawi sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), Masjid al-Aqsa, and Masjid Quba.
The encouragement to visit these mosques is mentioned in the hadiths.
➎
Ablution (wudu) and prayer according to the command means to perform ablution while observing its etiquettes and recommended acts (adab and sunan), and to pray with attention, humility, and submissiveness.
That is, to perform ablution in the best manner and to offer prayer in the best manner.
➏
Performing ablution and prayer according to the Sunnah is such a great deed
that through it, even some major sins are forgiven.
