´It was narrated that Zaid bin Khalid Al-Juhani said:` “I said, I must observe how the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prays tonight. So I lay down at his door. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) got up and prayed two brief Rak’ah, then two long ones, which were very, very long, then two Rak’ah which were shorter than the ones preceding them, then two Rak’ah which were shorter than the ones preceding them, then two Rak’ah which were shorter than the ones preceding them, then two Rak’ah, then Witr. That was thirteen Rak’ah.”

1؎ : From this narration, twelve rak‘ahs of tahajjud (night prayer) are derived, and one rak‘ah of witr; and it is possible that the tahajjud consists of only eight rak‘ahs, and the witr is five rak‘ahs, but due to performing two by two rak‘ahs separately, the narrator may have assumed that these too are part of tahajjud, «واللہ اعلم».
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefit: In the previous narration, thirteen rak‘ahs are mentioned including the Sunnah prayers of Fajr. Whereas from this hadith it is understood that, apart from the Sunnah prayers of Fajr, it is also permissible to pray thirteen rak‘ahs instead of eleven.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Khalid al-Juhani, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said: Tonight I will definitely observe how the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performs prayer. So I lay down at his doorstep or near his tent. Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed two light rak‘ahs, then he prayed two long rak‘ahs, then after them he prayed two rak‘ahs which were less than the first two rak‘ahs, then he prayed two rak‘ahs which were less than the first two rak‘ahs, then he prayed two rak‘ahs and they were less than the first two rak‘ahs, then he prayed two rak‘ahs which were less than the first two rak‘ahs, then he prayed witr, so these were (in total) thirteen rak‘ahs.
