Hadith 1357

´It was narrated that Abu Salamah bin `Abdur-Rahman said:` “I asked `Aishah: ‘With what did the Prophet (ﷺ) start his voluntary prayers?’ She said: ‘He would say: “Allahumma Rabba Jibra’il wa Mika’il wa Israfil, Fatiras-samawati wal-ard, `alimal-ghaybi wash- shahadah, Anta tahkumu baina `ibadika fima kanu fihi yakhtalifun, ihdini lima-khtulifa fihi minal-haqqi bi idhnika, innaka latahdi ila siratin mustaqim (O Allah, Lord of Jibra’il, Mika’il and Israfil, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen, You judge between Your slaves concerning that wherein they differ. Guide me to the disputed matters of truth by Your Leave, for You are the One Who guides to the straight Path).” (One of the narrators) `Abdur-Rahman bin `Umar said: “Bear in mind the word Jibra’il with a Hamzah - this is how it was narrated from the Prophet (ﷺ).”

Brief Explanation
1؎: And in the Qur'an, the word Jibril also has differences in recitation: some recite it as Jibril, some as Jibra'il, and some as Jibri'il. This is a Hebrew word, and its meaning is "servant of Allah." Jibril is the angel of revelation, Mika'il is for sustenance, and Israfil is for blowing the trumpet.
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:

This supplication can also be recited in the night prayer (tahajjud) as the opening supplication (du'a al-istiftah).

Jibril, Mikail, and Israfil (alayhim as-salam) are the closest and most virtuous of the angels to Allah.
But they too are servants of Allah.
And Allah is their Lord as well.
They have no share whatsoever in the attributes and powers of the Lord.
This point of tawhid (monotheism) is worthy of attention.

The disputes among the servants have been decided in this world through the sending of the noble prophets (alayhim as-salam) and the revelation sent down upon them.
Yet, some people continue to create new doubts and cause division.
Or, even after the truth has become clear, they do not accept it.
And they do not refrain from arguing.
Their judgment will only be on the Day of Resurrection.
When they will be punished, and the righteous will enjoy Allah’s rewards.

Guidance is in the hand of Allah.
Therefore, one should continue to supplicate to Allah for guidance.

The word Jibril can be pronounced in several ways:
Jabreeil, Jabreel, Jibra’eel, Jabra’eel, Jibraa’eel.
But in this supplication, Jibril is with a hamzah.

The noble hadith scholars (muhaddithin) also paid attention to the exact wording of the hadith.
And they would try to narrate every word exactly as they had heard it from their teacher.
Even though narrating by meaning (riwayah bil-ma’na) is permissible.
This practice of the hadith scholars demonstrates their honesty and truthfulness.
And that the ahadith they have transmitted are actionable and trustworthy,
provided they meet the criteria of authenticity.

Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
(1)
Saw’ah:
Private parts.
Aadar:
One whose testicles are swollen.
(2)
Jamaha:
Ran swiftly.
(3)
Nadab:
Mark.

Benefits and Issues:
(1)
A person may perform ritual bath (ghusl) naked in solitude, although it is better to bathe while covering oneself with a cloth, because someone may come unexpectedly. If there is a bathhouse or similar place where there is no risk of anyone entering, then there is no harm.
(2)
The Prophets (alayhim as-salam) are the most complete individuals in both character and appearance, and Allah, the Exalted, keeps them free from faults and defects. The Prophets (alayhim as-salam), being human, possess human emotions; thus, Musa (alayhis-salam) struck the stone in anger, and Allah, the Exalted, for the sake of His Prophet’s honor and dignity, granted the stone itself the ability to run by His command, just as the earth moves on its axis by His command.

Explanation:
1:
O Allah! Lord of Jibril, Mika'il, and Israfil! Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the hidden and the manifest, the One who decides between His servants regarding that in which they differ. O Allah! Guide me, by Your permission and command, to adopt and accept the truth in whatever there is disagreement, (grant me success), for indeed, You are the One who guides whomsoever You will to the straight path.
