Hadith 1344

´It was narrated that Abu Darda’ conveyed that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:` “Whoever goes to bed intending to wake up and pray during the night, but is overwhelmed by sleep until morning comes, what he intended will be recorded for him, and his sleep is a charity given to him by his Lord.”

Commentary:
Intention is the name of the resolve of the heart.
That is, at the time of sleeping, there should be a firm and complete resolve
that tonight I must wake up
so that the Tahajjud prayer may be performed.
It should not be that there is no determination in the heart,
and one merely expresses this with the tongue thinking that both sleep will be completed
and reward will also be attained.
Such an intention is not a true intention at all.
Therefore, the aforementioned reward will not be granted for this. ➋
This is the blessing of sincerity of intention,
that even if the action cannot be performed, reward is still granted,
provided that laziness and negligence are not done deliberately.
