´It was narrated that ‘Aishah the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ) said:` “One night at the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) I was late returning from the ‘Isha’, then I came and he said: ‘Where were you?’ I said: ‘I was listening to the recitation of a man among your Companions, for I have never heard a recitation or a voice like his from anyone.’ He got up and I got up with him, to go and listen to him. Then he turned to me and said: ‘This is Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhaifah. Praise is to Allah Who has created such men among my Ummah.’”

1؎: Salim, the freed slave of Abu Hudhayfah, was a renowned reciter (qari) and possessed a beautiful voice. These two qualities are rarely found together in a single reciter; most people may have a melodious voice but are unfamiliar with tajwid, that is, the rules of recitation, while some are reciters but do not have a pleasant voice. Furthermore, this hadith shows that there is no harm for a woman in listening to the voice of a non-mahram (unrelated) man.
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊ If someone is reciting (the Qur'an), one should listen silently and attentively.
➋ Among the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in), there was a great eagerness to listen to recitation.
➌ The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would also listen to recitation from the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in). Therefore, a great scholar or a person of high status should not hesitate to listen to recitation from someone of a lower status.
➍ A woman may listen to the recitation and speech of a non-mahram man.
➎ If Allah has granted someone a particular virtue, there is no harm in praising him, especially when the praise is not in his presence.
➏ A student's excellence is a cause of happiness for the teacher. One should also thank Allah for this. Similarly, parents should thank Allah for the righteousness, virtue, and excellence of their children.
