´It was narrated that Hashim bin Hashim said:` "I heard Sa'eed bin Musayyab say: 'Sa'd bin Abu Waqqas said: 'No one else became Muslim on the same day as I did; for seven days I was one-third of Islam.'"
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊ The meaning of "one third" is that before me, only two individuals had accepted Islam; with my acceptance, the total number of Muslims became three. For seven days, no one else entered into Islam.
➋ Here, the mention is of free, young men accepting Islam. Otherwise, before you (i.e., before Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu), Lady Khadijah radi Allahu anha (a woman), Zayd bin Harithah radi Allahu anhu (a slave), and Ali bin Abi Talib radi Allahu anhu (a youth) had already entered into Islam. Among the free men, Abu Bakr radi Allahu anhu is the first Muslim. After him, only one person accepted Islam before Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas radi Allahu anhu accepted Islam. In this way, they attained the distinction of being addressed as ﴿اَلسَّابِقُوْنَ الْاَوَّلُوْنَ﴾ ("the foremost, the first"), which is a tremendous honor.
