´Yazid bin Khumair narrated that ‘Abdullah bin Busr went out with the people on the Day of Fitr or Adha, and he objected to the Imam’s delay. He said:` “We would have finished by this time.” And that was the time of Tasbih.
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊ If the imam makes a mistake, a knowledgeable person can clarify his mistake.
➋ The performance of voluntary (nafl) prayer here means that the time of dislike (karahah) has ended. In this context, it refers to the time of Duha, that is, the forenoon prayer. As is mentioned in the narration of Tabarani: (وَذَلِكَ حِيْنَ يُسَبَّحُ الضَُحيٰ) — "That was the time when the voluntary prayers of Duha were performed."
➌ The aforementioned hadith indicates the legitimacy (mashru‘iyyah) of performing the Eid prayer early and the undesirability (karahah) of delaying it excessively. The hadith of al-Bara’ radi Allahu anhu also indicates the legitimacy of performing the prayer early. He states that on the day of Eid, we would perform the prayer before all other tasks. Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah writes in the commentary of this hadith that on the day of Eid, it is not appropriate to engage in any activity other than the Eid prayer and setting out for it, and this necessitates that the Eid prayer be performed early. (Fath al-Bari: 2/457) However, Imam Ibn al-Qayyim rahimahullah writes regarding this issue that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam would perform the Eid al-Fitr prayer with some delay, and the Eid al-Adha prayer early. (Zad al-Ma‘ad: 1/121)
