Benefits and Issues:
(Both narrations mentioned in this chapter are weak. The scholars of hadith have declared them weak. However, based on other evidences, performing a ritual bath (ghusl) on the day of Eid is recommended (mustahabb). As is narrated in Sunan Ibn Majah from Abdullah ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu, that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “Indeed, Allah the Exalted has made Friday a day of Eid for the Muslims. Therefore, whoever comes for Friday (prayer), he should perform a ritual bath (ghusl), and if he has perfume, he should use it, and he should also make sure to use the tooth-stick (miswak).” (Sunan Ibn Majah, Iqamat al-Salawat, Chapter: What has been narrated regarding adornment on the day of Friday, Hadith: 1098)
From this hadith, the scholars of hadith deduce that since the reason mentioned in the hadith for performing a ritual bath (ghusl), using perfume, and using the tooth-stick (miswak) on Friday is that Allah the Exalted has made Friday a day of Eid for the people of Islam, then doing these three things on the day of Eid will be even more beloved and preferable.
In addition, Imam Malik rahimahullah narrates from Nafi’ rahimahullah that Abdullah ibn Umar radi Allahu anhu used to perform a ritual bath (ghusl) before going to the Eid prayer place on the day of Eid al-Fitr. (Muwatta’ Imam Malik, al-‘Idayn: 1/177)
Furthermore, Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah has also discussed this issue in detail in “Irwa’.” He has written that there is no authentic (sahih) marfu’ hadith on this issue, but there is a mawquf narration, which is narrated by Imam Bayhaqi. At the end, he has declared this ritual bath (ghusl) to be recommended (mustahabb), and in support of this, he has quoted the statement of Ali radi Allahu anhu.
Therefore, in light of all these evidences, performing a ritual bath (ghusl) on the day of Eid is, insha Allah, recommended (mustahabb). And Allah knows best. For details, see: (Irwa’ al-Ghalil: 1/175, 177, Hadith: 146)
