Hadith 1290

حَدَّثَنَا هَدِيَّةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ ، وَعَمْرُو بْنُ رَافِعٍ الْبَجَلِيُّ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ مُوسَى ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، عَنْ عَطَاءٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ ، قَالَ : حَضَرْتُ الْعِيدَ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَصَلَّى بِنَا الْعِيدَ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " قَدْ قَضَيْنَا الصَّلَاةَ ، فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَجْلِسَ لِلْخُطْبَةِ فَلْيَجْلِسْ ، وَمَنْ أَحَبَّ أَنْ يَذْهَبَ فَلْيَذْهَبْ " .
´It was narrated that ‘Abdullah bin Sa’ib said:` “I attended the ‘Eid prayer with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He led us in offering the ‘Eid prayer, then he said: ‘I have finished the prayer. Whoever wants to sit (and listen to) the sermon, then let him sit, and whoever wants to leave, then let him leave.’”

From this it is understood that listening to the Eid sermon is not obligatory; however, it is preferable to listen to the sermon before leaving, just as the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma'in) used to do.

1572. Commentary: Listening to the Eid sermon is not obligatory; it is recommended (mustahabb). Perhaps this is why the prayer is performed first, so that whoever wishes to leave after the prayer may do so. 1155. Commentary:
According to other hadith scholars, this narration is authentic (sahih) or good (hasan). From this, the obligation (wujub) of the Eid sermon (khutbah) is negated; however, there is no doubt regarding its being a Sunnah. This is why the Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) emphasized the participation in the Eid gathering even for those women who are in their menstrual periods (hayd) and are exempt from the obligation of prayer. Therefore, care should also be taken to listen to the Eid sermon. Negligence or turning away from this is negligence or turning away from the Sunnah, which is not befitting for any Muslim.
