Hadith 1269

´It was narrated from Shurahbil bin Simt that he said to Ka’b:` “O Ka’b bin Murrah, narrate to us a Hadith from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), but be careful.” He said: “A man came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, ask Allah for rain!’ So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) raised his hands and said: ‘O Allah! Send wholesome, productive rain upon all of us, sooner rather than later, beneficial and not harmful.’ No sooner had they finished performing Friday (prayer) but they were revived. Then they came to him and complained to him about the rain, saying: ‘O Allah, around us and not upon us.’ Then the clouds began to disperse right and left.”

Benefits and Issues:

Narrating hadith and requesting scholars to relate hadith is commendable.

A scholar should exercise caution when narrating hadith so that nothing is mistakenly attributed to the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) which he did not say.
As a result, something might be considered a legal ruling which, in reality, is not a legal ruling.

Requesting a righteous person to make supplication (du'a) is permissible, whether the supplication pertains to an individual matter or a communal issue.

When someone is requested to make supplication, he should do so and not refuse.
However, it is possible to delay the supplication temporarily with the intention of making it at a more virtuous time, just as Prophet Ya'qub (alayhis salam) said to his sons:
"I will soon ask forgiveness for you from my Lord. Indeed, He is the Most Forgiving, Most Merciful."

It is permissible to supplicate for rain (istisqa) without performing the prayer of istisqa.

When rain becomes so abundant that it causes hardship, it is also permissible to supplicate for it to stop.
One should not doubt that rain is a mercy, and therefore supplicating for the cessation of mercy is not appropriate, because just as at one time the descent of rain is a mercy, at another time the cessation of rain can also be a mercy.

The immediate acceptance of the supplication of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is both a mercy from the Lord and a proof and miracle of his prophethood.

Reciting the supplication mentioned in the hadith for seeking rain brings greater blessing, and there is greater hope for its acceptance.
