´Hamzah bin Mughirah bin Shu’bah narrated that his father said:` “The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) lagged behind (on a journey) and we reached the people when ‘Abdur Rahman bin ‘Awf had already led them in one Rak’ah of the prayer. When he realized that the Prophet (ﷺ) was there, he wanted to step back, but the Prophet (ﷺ) gestured to him that he should complete the prayer. He said: ‘You have done well, do the same in the future.’”

Benefits and Issues:
➊
This incident took place during the expedition of Tabuk.
➋
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) went far from the caravan to relieve himself. Al-Mughirah ibn Shu’bah (radi Allahu anhu) went with the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) carrying a water vessel. When they returned, the Fajr prayer had already been established and one rak‘ah had been performed. (Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Salat, Chapter: The Precedence of the Congregation Led by Someone if the Imam is Delayed, Hadith: 374 before Hadith 422)
➌
For other prayers, especially the ‘Isha prayer, the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in) used to wait for the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). But for the Fajr prayer, they gave importance to performing it at its earliest time. It is possible that the prayer was started because it was not known whether the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) would return quickly or be further delayed.
➍
If the appointed imam is late for some reason, another person can be appointed as imam and the prayer can be performed. However, it is better to wait a few minutes.
➎
The noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in) felt that by not waiting further for the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), they had made a mistake. Upon this, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) reassured them that giving importance to performing the prayer on time was correct.
