´It was narrated from Ibn ‘Umar that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) forgot and said the Taslim after two Rak’ah. A man who was called Dhul-Yadain said to him:` ‘O Messenger of Allah, has the prayer been shortened or did you forget?’ He said: ‘It has not been shortened and I did not forget.’ He said: ‘But you prayed two Rak’ah.’ He said: ‘Is what Dhul-Yadain says true?’ They said: ‘Yes.’ So he went forward and performed two Rak’ah and said the Salam, then he prostrated twice for prostrations of forgetfulness.
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊ If fewer units (rak‘ahs) are performed by mistake, then after completing the missed units, one should perform the prostration of forgetfulness (sujud as-sahw).
➋ The imam speaking with the congregation regarding whether the prayer was completed or not, and the congregation informing the imam, does not invalidate the previously performed prayer. This is because this conversation was not done intentionally within the prayer. Therefore, it is not necessary to repeat the prayer from the beginning.
➌ The prostration of forgetfulness (sujud as-sahw) is also valid after the salutation (salam).
