Hadith 1196

´It was narrated that Abu Salamah said:` “Aishah narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed Witr with one Rak’ah, then he prayed two Rak’ah in which he recited while sitting, then when he wanted to bow, he stood up and bowed.”

Brief Explanation
1؎: Imam Ahmad says that I neither prohibit these two units (rak‘ahs) after witr, nor do I perform them myself, and Imam Malik has rejected them. Nawawi says: The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performed these two units sitting, in order to demonstrate that performing supererogatory (nafl) prayers after witr is permissible; he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not perform them regularly. Qadi ‘Iyad did not accept these narrations. Hafiz Ibn Hajar says that perhaps this is for the traveler: when there is no hope of waking up for the night prayer (tahajjud), he should perform these two units after witr and then sleep. As is narrated from Thawban (radi Allahu anhu): We were with the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) on a journey, and he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “Travel is a hardship, so when any of you has performed witr, let him perform two units (rak‘ahs); if he wakes up (later), then good, otherwise these two units will suffice for him in place of the night prayer (tahajjud),” «واللہ اعلم».
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefit:
It is permissible to perform two rak‘ahs after the witr prayer, which may be offered either sitting or standing. However, without a valid excuse, performing prayer while sitting yields only half the reward. (: Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Taqsir, Chapter: The Prayer of One Who Sits, Hadith: 1115)
