´It was narrated that ‘Asim bin Damrah As-Saluli said:` “We asked ‘Ali about the voluntary (prayer) of Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) during the day. He said: ‘You will not be able.’ We said: ‘Inform us of it, we will do what we can of it?’ So he said: ‘When he prayed the Fajr he would delay praying any more. When the sun appeared over there (west) – like it appears here, meaning in the direction of the east, about the amount for the ‘Asr prayer from there, meaning in the direction of the west, meaning before the Maghrib – he would stand and perform two Rak’ah* then he would delay praying until the sun appeared over there (west), meaning in the direction of the east, about the amount of the Zuhr prayer from there, then he would stand and perform four. And, four before the Zuhr when the sun passed the zenith, and two Rak’ah after it, and, four before the ‘Asr, separating between every two Rak’ah with Taslim** upon the angels that are close (to Allah), the Prophets, and those who follow them among the Muslims and the believers.’” 'Ali said: "That is sixteen Rak'ah of voluntary prayer which Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) performed during the day. And there are very few who offer them regularly." Waki` said: “My father added: Habib bin Abu Thabit said: ‘O Abu Ishaq, this mosque filled with gold would not be dearer to me than this Hadith of yours.’” * Meaning, when the sun was low above the eastern horizon. That is the time of the Duha. ** Meaning the Tashah-hud.
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊
The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performed many voluntary (nafl) prayers,
or encouraged them.
Some of these have been mentioned in this hadith.
➋
The emphasized Sunnah (sunnah mu’akkadah) and non-emphasized Sunnah (ghayr mu’akkadah) are also included among the voluntary prayers (nafl).
However, their importance is greater than that of general voluntary prayers.
➌
In this hadith, besides the emphasized and non-emphasized Sunnah prayers, the prayers of Ishraq and Duha (Chasht)
are mentioned.
These are voluntary prayers performed daily.
Similarly, Tahajjud is also a voluntary prayer performed daily,
which is offered at night.
These are such voluntary prayers
for which a specific time is fixed.
➍
Some voluntary prayers do not have a fixed time, such as Tahiyyat al-Masjid (greeting the mosque), Tahiyyat al-Wudu (greeting after ablution), Salat al-Hajah (prayer of need), Salat al-Shukr (prayer of gratitude), etc.
Their mention is found in the books of hadith at their respective places.
➎
The time for Ishraq begins when the sun has risen a little above the horizon.
From this hadith, it is understood that this prayer can be performed until the shadow becomes equal to the object.
➏
The time for the Duha prayer begins a little after the time for Ishraq starts,
that is, when the sun has risen considerably,
and it lasts until before noon.
It is prohibited to pray exactly at noon (zawal).
➐
In authentic ahadith, the mention of Salat al-Awwabin is also found.
Its time has been described as when the hooves of the young camels are scorched by the intensity of the heat, and this is before zawal.
Some have stated that this is also the time for Duha.
And Allah knows best.
➑
Among the hadith scholars (muhaddithin), the value and importance of knowledge was so great
that in their view, a single hadith was more precious than a vast treasure of gold and silver.
➒
In this, it is mentioned to perform four Sunnah of Asr with one salam, because by “salam” in between, what is meant is not the well-known salam, but rather supplication for the believers.
