´It was narrated that 'Aishah said:` The Messenger of Allah said: "O 'Uthman, if Allah places you in authority over this matter (as the caliph) some day and the hypocrites want to rid you of the garment with which Allah has clothed you (i.e., the position of caliph), do not take it off." He said that three times. (One of the narrators) Nu'man said: "I said to 'Aishah: 'What kept you from telling the people that?' She said: 'I was made to forget it.'"

1؎: By "shirt" is meant the caliphate. It is evident that the caliphate of Uthman radi Allahu anhu was legitimate; the opponents were afflicted with injustice, hypocrisy, and obstinacy. Umm al-Mu'minin Aisha radi Allahu anha had also, by divine will, forgotten this hadith; later, she remembered the words of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Commentary: (1) In this, there is information about the trial that befell Uthman (radi Allahu anhu). It occurred exactly as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) had foretold. This is a proof of the Prophethood of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).
(2) From this, it is established that Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) was the rightful Caliph.
(3) When the ruler of a country is maintaining order and administration, it is not permissible to incite turmoil and disorder against him on trivial pretexts—except if he commits crimes such as strengthening disbelief and polytheism (kufr and shirk) or causing the weakness of Islam.
(4) In this, there is an explicit statement regarding the hypocrisy of the opponents of Uthman (radi Allahu anhu).
(5) If a narrator makes a mistake or forgets in some hadiths, this alone is not sufficient to declare him weak, especially if he later remembers and corrects it. However, if a person makes frequent mistakes, then due to the weakness of his memory, he is considered weak.

´Narrated 'Aishah:` that the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "O 'Uthman! Indeed Allah may give you a shirt, and if they wish that you take it off, do not take it off for them."
Shaykh Dr. Abdur Rahman Freywai
Explanation: 1: By "shirt" here is meant the robe of caliphate (the mantle of caliphate). The meaning is that if the hypocrites ask you to relinquish the caliphate and seek to depose you from it, do not let this happen, because at that time you will be upon the truth and those demanding your resignation will be upon falsehood. It was in light of this very statement of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that Uthman (radi Allahu anhu) drank the cup of martyrdom, but he did not relinquish (the caliphate).
