´It was narrated that Jabir said:` “Sulaik Al-Ghatafani came while the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was delivering the sermon. The Prophet (ﷺ) said to him: ‘Did you perform two Rak’ah before you came?’ He said: ‘No.’ He said: ‘Then perform two Rak’ah, but make them brief.’”

1؎: Imam Mizzi says that the narrator made a mistake in this narration, and «صواب» is that «أصلّيت ركعتين قبل أن تجلس» the narrator «تجيىء» it. Now, the scholars differ as to whether Tahiyyat al-Masjid is Sunnah or obligatory (wajib). The apparent meaning of the hadith indicates its obligation, and Imam Shawkani has established its obligation in a separate treatise, and Allamah Nawab Siddiq Hasan has also declared this to be correct in Al-Rawdah al-Nadiyyah (1/372). In light of the evidences, performing two units (rak‘ah) for the one who enters the mosque on the day of Jumu‘ah is at the very least an emphasized Sunnah (sunnah mu’akkadah). Whereas the researchers have declared it to be obligatory (wajib).

Benefit: The aforementioned narration has been declared weak in its chain by our esteemed researcher, whereas this narration—without the words (qabla an taji’a)—is also narrated in Sahih Muslim and Abu Dawud. The researcher has mentioned this in the footnote below. And in Sunan Abu Dawud (Hadith: 1116), it has been declared authentic. Therefore, this narration, without the words (qabla an taji’a), is authentic.
