Hadith 1091

´It was narrated from Anas bin Malik that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:` “Whoever performs ablution on Friday, it is well and good for him, and he has done what is obligatory for him. But whoever takes a bath, bath is better.”

Brief Explanation
1؎ : The meaning of «فبها» is «فباالرخصة أخذ», that is, he has chosen the concession, and the meaning of ni‘mah is «هي الرخصة», that is, this concession is excellent. From this hadith, it is deduced that the ritual bath (ghusl) for Jumu‘ah is not obligatory, because in it, firstly, permission has been granted to suffice with ablution (wudu), and secondly, the ritual bath (ghusl) has been described as superior, from which the permission to not perform the ritual bath (ghusl) is derived.

Benefits and Issues:

The mentioned narration has been declared weak in its chain of transmission by our esteemed researcher.
Furthermore, he has written that the narration of Abu Dawud suffices in this regard.
It is likely for this reason that other scholars have declared it authentic.
Therefore, according to the scholars, this narration is actionable and a valid proof.

Performing a ritual bath (ghusl) is not a condition for the validity of Jumu‘ah (Friday prayer); however, it is a recommended (mustahabb, i.e., preferred) act.

If, due to some engagement, one is unable to perform the ritual bath (ghusl) and the time for Jumu‘ah arrives, then one should perform ablution (wudu) and proceed for Jumu‘ah.
This is because listening to the sermon (khutbah) is more important than the ritual bath (ghusl).
