´It was narrated that Bara’ said:` “We prayed with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) facing towards Baitul-Maqdis (Jerusalem) for eighteen months, then the Qiblah was changed to the Ka’bah two months after the Prophet (ﷺ) entered Al-Madinah. When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed towards Baitul-Maqdis, he would often lift his face towards the heavens, and Allah knew what was in the heart of His Prophet and how he longed to face the Ka’bah (during prayer). Jibril appeared (in the sky), and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) started watching him as he was descending between the heavens and the earth, waiting to see what he would bring. Then Allah revealed the words: ‘Verily, We have seen the turning of your face towards the heaven. Surely, We shall turn you to a Qiblah that shall please you, so turn your face in the direction of Al-Masjid Al-Haram (at Makkah). And wherever you people are, turn your faces (during prayer) in that direction.’ [2:144] Then someone came to us and said: ‘The Qiblah has been changed to the Ka’bah.’ We had performed two Rak’ah facing towards Jerusalem. And we were bowing. So we turned around, and we continued our prayer. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: ‘O Jibril! What about our prayer facing towards Baitul- Maqdis?’ Then Allah revealed the words: “And Allah would never make your faith to be lost.” [2:143]
Explanation & Benefits
Maulana Ataullah Sajid
Benefits and Issues:
➊
This narration is severely weak (rather, it is munkar).
There is also a contradiction in the wording of this hadith itself: in the first sentence, a period of eighteen months is mentioned, while in the second sentence, a period of two months is stated.
➋
This incident is also narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari.
However, in it, instead of eighteen months, the words sixteen or seventeen months are mentioned.
See: (Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Iman, Chapter: Prayer is from Faith, Hadith: 40)
And the narration of Bukhari is more authentic.
Because the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) departed from his house in Makkah Mukarramah on the 27th of Safar, and from the Cave of Thawr on the 1st of Rabi' al-Awwal.
And on the 8th of Rabi' al-Awwal, he arrived at Quba, while the command for the change of qiblah was revealed in the middle of Rajab in the second year.
Thus, this intermediate period amounts to sixteen months and a few days.
And Allah knows best.
➌
After the change of the qiblah, the very first prayer that the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) performed facing the Ka'bah was the 'Asr prayer. (Reference as above)
➍
The mention of the Ansar turning towards the Ka'bah during the prayer upon learning of the command is also established by an authentic hadith. (Reference as above)
➎
One should act upon a report or hadith narrated by a trustworthy person.
➏
If a person is praying facing the qiblah according to his conviction,
then during the prayer he comes to know that the direction of the qiblah is actually elsewhere,
he should turn towards that direction during the prayer itself.
His previous prayer is valid.
There is no need to repeat it.
