Hadith 1009

´It was narrated that Anas bin Malik told that ‘Umar said:` “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), why do you not take the Maqam of Ibrahim as a place of prayer?’ Then the following was revealed: ‘And take you (people) the Maqam of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.’” [2:125]

Benefits and Issues:

➊ The Maqam Ibrahim refers to the stone upon which Prophet Ibrahim (alayhis salam) stood while constructing the Ka'bah. This stone bears the footprints of Prophet Ibrahim (alayhis salam).

➋ After performing the circumambulation (tawaf), one should offer two units (rak‘ah) of prayer near the Maqam Ibrahim (alayhis salam). Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhuma) said: The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) arrived, performed seven circuits (tawaf) around the House of Allah, offered two units of prayer behind the Maqam Ibrahim (alayhis salam), and performed circuits (sa‘i) between Safa and Marwah. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Salat, Chapter: The Statement of Allah, the Exalted: “And take the Maqam Ibrahim as a place of prayer” (), Hadith: 395)

➌ When offering prayer near the Maqam Ibrahim (alayhis salam), one must face the Ka'bah. Some uninformed people try to face the Maqam Ibrahim itself. If the face is not towards the Ka'bah, this is not correct, because the qiblah is the structure of the Ka'bah itself.

➍ If space is not available near the Maqam Ibrahim, then two units of prayer can be offered anywhere in Masjid al-Haram.

➎ In this, there is a virtue of Umar (radi Allahu anhu): that the very desire which Allah was going to command was inspired in his heart. There are also several other matters in which Umar (radi Allahu anhu) had a desire in his heart before the rulings were revealed, and then rulings were revealed from the heavens in accordance with his desire. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab al-Salat, Chapter: What has come regarding the qiblah... etc., Hadith: 402)
