Hadith 100

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو شُعَيْبٍ صَالِحُ بْنُ الْهَيْثَمِ الْوَاسِطِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْقُدُّوسِ بْنُ بَكْرِ بْنِ خُنَيْسٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ مِغْوَلٍ ، عَنْ عَوْنِ بْنِ أَبِي جُحَيْفَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَبُو بَكْرٍ ، وَعُمَرُ سَيِّدَا كُهُولِ أَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ مِنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ ، وَالْآخِرِينَ ، إِلَّا النَّبِيِّينَ ، وَالْمُرْسَلِينَ " .
´It was narrated from 'Awn bin Abi Juhaifah that his father said:` "The Messenger of Allah said: 'Abu Bakr and 'Umar are the leaders of the mature people of Paradise, the first and the last, except for the Prophets and the Messengers.'"

Commentary:
A prophet (nabi) is one upon whom revelation (wahy) descends, and a messenger (rasul) is more specific than this. Some have said that a rasul is one who possesses a separate book and law (shari‘ah), and is sent to a specific nation, while a nabi is one who follows in his footsteps, acting as a conveyer (muballigh). Revelation (wahy) comes to both. For further details, refer to the benefits and issues under Hadith: 95.
