Hadith 5

مَنْ قَرَأَ حَرْفًا مِنْ كِتَابِ اللَٰهِ فَلَهُ بِهِ حَسَنَةٌ، وَالحَسَنَةُ بِعَشْرِ أَمْثَالِهَا، لَا أَقُولُ {الم} حَرْفٌ، وَلَكِنْ أَلِفٌ حَرْفٌ وَلَامٌ حَرْفٌ وَمِيمٌ حَرْفٌ
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever recites a single letter from the Book of Allah, for him is a good deed in return, and each good deed is multiplied tenfold (i.e., he will receive ten times the reward). I do not say that «الم» is a single letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter, and Meem is a letter." [اسناده حسن، سنن ترمذي:2910]
