وعن عمر رضي الله تعالى عنه : " أنه كتب إلى أمراء الأجناد في رجال غابوا عن نسائهم : أن يأخذوهم بأن ينفقوا أو يطلقوا فإن طلقوا بعثوا بنفقة ما حبسوا " أخرجه الشافعي والبيهقي بإسناد حسن.
Narrated 'Umar: He wrote (letters) to the commanders of the armies regarding some men (soldiers) who have been absent from their wives, that they should impose upon them to spend on their wives or divorce them; and if they divorce them they should then send the maintenance which they have withheld. [ash-Shafi'i reported it, then al-Baihaqi with a Hasan (good) chain of narrators].

«أخرجه البيهقي:7 /469، والشافعي في مسنده، فيه مسلم بن خالد وهو ضعيف من جهة حفظه.»©Explanation:
The background of this written directive of Umar radi Allahu anhu is stated as follows: One night, Umar radi Allahu anhu was on patrol.
He passed by a tent in which a woman was reciting poignant verses about the prolonged separation from her husband.
Umar radi Allahu anhu also heard those verses.
Her husband was employed in the army.
Umar radi Allahu anhu inquired from his daughter Hafsah radi Allahu anha: For how long can a woman remain without her husband? Hafsah radi Allahu anha replied: Four months or six months.
After this, Umar radi Allahu anhu wrote an order to the commanders of the army, instructing them to command the soldiers to definitely return home after four months; otherwise, they should divorce their wives and also send their previous maintenance (nafaqah) along with it.
