Hadith 949

Narrated Umm Salamah (RA): I put Sabir (a type of medicine) on my eyes after Abu Salamah (RA) had died. So Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: "It gives the face a glow, so apply it only at night and remove it in the day time, and do not comb (your hair) with scent or henna, for it is a dye." I asked, "What should I use when combing (my hair)?" He replied, "You should use lote-tree leaves." [Reported by Abu Dawud and an-Nasa'i: its chain of narrators is Hasan (good)].

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
This narration is weak in its chain of transmission; however, it is correct that anything which imparts color—such as kohl (surma) or henna (mehndi)—or anything that beautifies and enhances the radiance of the face—such as aloe—or anything that gives fragrance—such as scented soap, perfume, etc.—is prohibited for a woman during mourning. However, bathing (ghusl), simple combing, and the use of unscented soap are permissible. Lotus leaves (beri ke patte) neither impart color nor fragrance; therefore, they may be used.
