Hadith 905

Narrated 'Aishah (RA): Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to divide visits to his wives equally and say, "O Allah, this is my division concerning what I possess, so do not blame me concerning what You possess and I do not." [Reported by al-Arba'a; Ibn Hibban and al-Hakim graded it Sahih (authentic). at-Tirmidhi held that the stronger view is that it is Mursal (a missing link in the chain after the Tabi'i)].

Explanation:
From this hadith, it is understood that one must establish justice and fairness among one’s wives. However, if there is a greater inclination of the heart towards one of them, there will be no reproach for that, because women differ in terms of character and conduct, morals, beauty and appearance, and habits and traits.
The woman who possesses more beauty and appearance, good morals and qualities, and the characteristic of obedience to her husband, the husband’s inclination will naturally be greater towards her.

Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
“I am powerless.” That is, [this refers to] heartfelt love, because it is connected to the personality, qualities, and conduct of the person concerned. In these matters, individuals are not equal; therefore, love also cannot be the same for everyone. However, outward conduct with wives must be the same, because in being wives, all are equal and their rights are also equal. Even though equality in these outward matters was not obligatory upon the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), yet he himself maintained equality and acted justly… (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)…

Commentary:
Note:
(Hammad ibn Zayd and other more reliable narrators have narrated this from Ayyub «عن أبي قلابة عن النبي ﷺ» as mursal, but the first part of the hadith «اللهم هذا قسمي فيما أملك» is hasan.

Benefits and Issues:
The meaning is that I do not fall short in social conduct, but the matter of the heart is not within my control.
Therefore, do not reproach me for any increase or decrease in heartfelt love.
From this, it is understood that one who has more than one wife—if he maintains justice and fairness in outward conduct—will not be held accountable for any deficiency or excess in the inclination of the heart.
And Allah knows best.
