Hadith 817

Narrated Abu Qilabah on the authority of Anas (RA): Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: "The most versed in the rules of inheritance among you is Zaid bin Thabit." [Reported by Ahmad and al-Arba'a except Abu Dawud. at-Tirmidhi, Ibn Hibban and al-Hakim graded it Sahih (authentic). However, it was considered defective due to being Mursal (missing link in the chain after the Tabi'i)].

«أخرجه الترمذي، المناقب، باب مناقب معاذ بن جبل، حديث:3790، 3791، وابن ماجه، المقدمة، حديث:154، والنسائي في الكبرٰي:5 /78، حديث:8287.»©Explanation:
This is actually an excerpt from a longer hadith.
The complete narration is as follows: The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: “The most merciful and compassionate person towards my ummah from among my ummah is Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu); the strictest in matters of religion is Umar (radi Allahu anhu); the most modest is Uthman ibn Affan (radi Allahu anhu); the best judge is Ali ibn Abi Talib (radi Allahu anhu); the best reciter of the Book of Allah is Ubayy ibn Ka‘b (radi Allahu anhu); the most knowledgeable regarding what is lawful and unlawful is Mu‘adh ibn Jabal (radi Allahu anhu); and the most expert in the knowledge of inheritance (ilm al-fara’id) is Zayd ibn Thabit (radi Allahu anhu).”
This is why the scholars of Islam have generally given preference to the opinion of Zayd ibn Thabit (radi Allahu anhu) in disputed issues of inheritance.

Explanation:
1:
Although all the Companions were trustworthy (amin), Abu Ubaydah radi Allahu anhu was distinguished in this regard. Therefore, he was given the title (Amin al-Ummah) (in today's terminology, the General Secretary of the entire Ummah). In the same way, many good qualities are shared by many Companions, but some have a particular characteristic due to which the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam declared them distinguished in that quality. For example, in modesty (haya), ‘Uthman; in judicial matters (qada’), ‘Ali; in inheritance (mirath), Zayd ibn Thabit; and in recitation (qira’ah), Ubayy ibn Ka‘b, and others radi Allahu anhum.
