وعنه رضي الله عنه قال : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم : « من آوى ضالة فهو ضال ما لم يعرفها ». رواه مسلم.
Narrated [Zaid bin Khalid (RA)]: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: "He who shelters a stray (animal) is astray himself if he does not make it known." [Reported by Muslim].

In this hadith, there is a warning that if a person picks up a lost item with the intention of announcing it, or with the intention that perhaps it might not fall into the hands of someone who would not announce it and would instead usurp it for himself, then there is no harm in picking it up.
But if his intention from the outset is to consume (usurp) it and he does not announce it or anything of the sort, then such a person is himself misguided.
He should not touch the lost item; let it remain where it is, and he should absolve himself of responsibility.
