Hadith 785

Narrated Abu Hurairah (RA): Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: "When a son of Adam (i.e. any human being) dies his deeds are discontinued, with three exceptions: Sadaqah, whose benefit is continuous; or knowledge from which benefit continues to be reaped, or a righteous child who supplicates for him." [Reported by Muslim].

«أخرجه مسلم، الوصية، باب ما يلحق الإنسان من الثواب بعد وفاته، حديث:1631.»©Explanation:
➊ This hadith shows that even after death, the deceased continues to receive the reward of certain deeds.
➋ Three things are mentioned in this hadith: First, ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah)—such charity that is dedicated for the benefit of the public, for example: constructing a guesthouse, digging a well, installing water taps, building mosques, constructing hospitals, building bridges, or constructing roads.
Whichever of these deeds a person performs during his lifetime, all of them will be counted as ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah).
Secondly, knowledge—that is, imparting religious education to people, arranging for students’ educational expenses, authoring and compiling books, establishing a system of teaching and instruction, constructing religious schools (madaris), arranging for the printing and publication of religious books, etc.
Thirdly, righteous offspring, which includes sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters, maternal grandsons, maternal granddaughters, and can also include spiritual children—those whom one adorned with religious knowledge, showed them the path of guidance and the straight path (sirat al-mustaqim), and saved them from being seized by eternal punishment.
➌ Righteous offspring remember the deceased through their own righteous and virtuous deeds and pray for the forgiveness of his sins and the elevation of his ranks.
This is, in reality, the fruit and result of the deceased’s own actions, which he continues to receive even after death.
And this is not contrary to the verse: ﴿ وَأَنْ لَيْسَ لِلْإِنسَانِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَى ﴾ but rather in accordance with it, that he receives the reward of his own striving.
