وعن معمر بن عبد الله رضي الله عنه قال : إني كنت أسمع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم يقول : « الطعام بالطعام مثلا بمثل » وكان طعامنا يومئذ الشعير. رواه مسلم.
Narrated Ma'mar bin 'Abdullah (RA): I used to hear Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) say, "Food (may be sold) for food, of same quantities." Our food at that time consisted of barley. [Reported by Muslim].

According to this hadith, if foodstuff (grain) is to be sold in exchange for foodstuff, then equality is necessary; any excess or deficiency is prohibited.
From the aforementioned narration of Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman radi Allahu anhu, it is understood that wheat and barley are two separate kinds, not one.
This is also the opinion of the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum; therefore, equality is not necessary in the exchange of barley and wheat.
However, Imam Malik rahimahullah considers both to be of the same kind and deems equality obligatory between them.
