Narrated Ibn Mas'ud (RA): Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: "Do not buy the fish that is in the water, for it involves uncertainty (risk)." [Reported by Ahmad who indicated that the correct view is that it is Mawquf (saying of a Companion, i.e. Ibn Mas'ud].

«أخرجه أحمد:1 /388، يزيد بن أبي زياد ضعيف وعنعن.»©Explanation:
➊ According to this hadith, the buying and selling of fish present in water is prohibited. The reason for this is that it is not possible to accurately determine how many fish there are, what their quantity is, which type of fish they are, whether they are of a superior and best breed or of a lesser breed, whether they are large or small in size and thickness, or even whether they are fish or crocodiles. When there is no precise knowledge, then what exactly is being sold? Neither is it in the possession of the seller, nor is it his personal property. Even if there are private ponds, it is still impossible to determine the quantity, number, and specification of the species.
➋ This hadith is mawquf (stopped at the Companion), and also weak, because in its chain of narration is Yazid ibn Abi Ziyad, who is a weak narrator. And there is also irsal (disconnection) between Musayyib ibn Rafi‘ and Abdullah ibn Mas‘ud radi Allahu anhu. ‘Allamah Sindhi rahimahullah writes regarding this that the mentioned narration is weak in its chain, but correct in its meaning. And this appears to be closer to what is correct. For further details, see: (al-Mawsu‘ah al-Hadithiyyah, Musnad al-Imam Ahmad: 6/197, 199)
