Hadith 519

Samurah bin Jundub (RAA) narrated that The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “begging is like a scratch with which a man scratches his face; unless one is asking the ruler or in the case of dire necessity.” Related by At-Tirmidhi, who regarded it as Sahih.

Lexical Explanation 519:
"Kudūḥ" — both the "kāf" and "dāl" have a ḍammah. It is the plural of "kadḥ." In "kadḥ," the "kāf" has a fatḥah and the "dāl" is sakin. It is synonymous with "khadsh" and "khamesh," meaning scratch and wound. That is, there will be marks of wounds and signs of scratches on their faces which, in reality, will be undesirable. Or, it may be that signs of humiliation, disgrace, and insult will be apparent on their faces. In one manuscript, instead of "kudūḥun," the word "kaddū" appears, but there is no difference in meaning.

Benefit 519:
This hadith proves that it is not permissible to ask from anyone without necessity, and even a needy person should ask from the king or the head of state, because the needy have a right over the public treasury (bayt al-māl), and asking from the king is a request for the attainment of one's right; it has nothing to do with anyone's favor or benevolence.
