Lexical Explanation 516:
مُضْغَۃٌ and in one manuscript مُزعَۃٌ is also found. In both, the first letter has a dammah (u-sound) and the second letter is silent. Its meaning is "a piece." The meaning here is that such a person will have no worth, status, or honor on the Day of Resurrection, and he will come with humiliation, disgrace, and in a lowly state. There is also the possibility that it means his face will be punished so severely that even the flesh of his face will be stripped away. Or he will be raised in such a state that his face will be nothing but a bare skeleton of bones, so that this becomes a sign for his recognition.
Benefit 516:
From this hadith, the condemnation of the profession of begging is understood. Asking and begging is only permissible for three types of people. Hazrat Qabisah radi Allahu anhu narrates that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: "O Qabisah! Asking is only permissible for three persons: One is the person who has taken on a guarantee (i.e., he has made a promise regarding someone that he will be responsible for him, and if that person does not pay by a certain time, then he himself will pay; then, when the person does not pay as promised, the guarantor has to pay). For such a guarantor, it is permissible to ask up to the amount he has paid, until he obtains that amount through asking, then he should stop asking. The second is the person who has been struck by a calamity that has destroyed all his wealth; for him, it is permissible to ask until he has enough to sustain himself. And the third is the person whom poverty and destitution have surrounded, and in addition, three intelligent men from his people stand up for his case and say that such-and-such a person is afflicted by poverty and destitution; for him as well, it is permissible to ask until he has enough to sustain himself. O Qabisah! Other than these, I consider asking to be unlawful. Whatever a person obtains through asking outside of these cases, he will be consuming unlawful wealth." [صحيح مسلم ، الزكاة ، باب من تحل له المسألة للناس ، حديث : 1044]
Therefore, every person who asks should consider whether he falls under any of these three categories. If he does, then indeed it is permissible for him to ask; otherwise, asking is impermissible and unlawful for him. And Allah knows best.
