➊ This hadith is clear evidence that washing the entire foot is obligatory.
➋ In another hadith, which Muslim has narrated, it is stated that for whatever part of the foot remains dry, there is fire. [صحيح مسلم، الطهارة، باب وجوب غسل الرجلين بكماله، حديث : 241]
➌ In Abu Dawud, there is also a narration from Khalid bin Ma'dan with the same meaning, that the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam saw a man praying who had a small dry spot on the back of his foot. He ordered him, "Go, first perform ablution (wudu) again, and then pray." [سنن ابي داؤد، الطهارة، باب تفريق الوضوء، حديث : 175]
➍ This and other narrations of the same kind indicate that washing the feet is obligatory; wiping (masah) is insufficient.
➎ In light of these very ahadith, the four Imams, Ahl al-Sunnah, and the mujtahid scholars of the Ummah have unanimously declared washing the feet to be obligatory. Those who do not consider washing the feet obligatory and hold the view of wiping (masah) are refuted by these ahadith.

Commentary:
If, before the prayer, any part of the limbs of ablution (wudu) is found to be dry, then one should perform ablution again. And if it is discovered after the prayer, then one should perform ablution again and also repeat the prayer, as is explicitly mentioned in the following hadith.
