Lexical Explanation:
«شَهِدْتُّ بِنْتًا» That your daughter and the honorable wife of Uthman radi Allahu anhu was Umm Kulthum radi Allahu anha, who passed away in the 9th year of Hijrah.
«تُدْفَنُ» This is in the passive form, meaning at the time of her burial.
«تَدْمَعَانِ» Both the “ta” and “meem” have a fatha, meaning the tears were flowing, the eyes were shedding tears.
Benefit: This hadith proves that crying over the deceased is permissible, it is not disliked. When the tears flowed from the eyes of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam at the time of the death of his beloved son Ibrahim, Abdur Rahman bin Awf radi Allahu anhu said: O Messenger of Allah! Do you also weep? The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied: “O Ibn Awf! This is a mercy.” Then the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, while weeping, said: “The eye is tearful and the heart is grieved, but we do not say except that which pleases our Lord.” [صحيح البخاري ، الجنائز ، حديث : 1303]
Thus, if due to grief, paternal affection overcomes a person and tears flow from the eyes, it is not blameworthy or censured; however, wailing and lamentation with the tongue is prohibited.
