Benefit:
The aforementioned narration has been declared weak in its chain by our esteemed researcher, and according to other scholars as well, it is narrated that the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam offered the funeral prayer for a deceased person, then proceeded to his grave and, from the side of his head, threw three handfuls of (earth) upon him. [سنن ابن ماجه ، الجنائز ، حديث : 1565]
Therefore, if the one who performs the funeral prayer remains until the burial, he should at least throw three handfuls of earth upon the grave.
Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah writes regarding this that throwing three handfuls of earth upon the grave after burying the deceased is recommended (mustahabb) according to the aforementioned narration, i.e., the hadith of Abu Hurairah radi Allahu anhu. However, the narration in which it is mentioned to recite «مِنْهَا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ» after the first handful, «وَفِيهَا نُعِيْدُكُمْ» after the second, and «وَمِنْهَا نُخَرِجُكُمْ تَارَةَ اُخَرٰي» after the third, is considered weak by the scholars.
Shaykh al-Albani rahimahullah writes regarding this that this hadith has no basis, therefore, according to this discussion and the evidences, it is a recommended act to throw three handfuls of earth without uttering any phrase or word. «والله اعلم» For further details, see: [احكام الجنائز وبدعها للالباني ، ص : 194 طبع مكتبة المعارف ، الرياض ، واروا الغليل ، رقم : 751]
