Hadith 414

وعن أنس رضي الله عنه : أن النبي صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم استسقى فأشار بظهر كفيه إلى السماء. أخرجه مسلم.
Narrated Anas (RA): The Prophet (ﷺ) prayed for rain pointing the back of his palms to the sky. [Reported by Muslim].

Explanation:
➊ Supplicating with the right hands raised is also transmitted from the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), whereas in this hadith, the mention is of adopting this method contrary to the general manner of supplication.

➋ The scholars have reconciled between these two methods by stating that when supplicating to seek mercy, the palms should be facing upwards, and when supplicating to avert harm or calamity, the palms should be turned downwards. This signifies optimism (tafā’ul), meaning: “O Allah! Change our condition in this way.”

➌ The wisdom behind turning and reversing the cloak during the supplication for rain (du‘a al-istisqa) is likely the same, and the same wisdom applies to turning the palms downward: that Allah, the Exalted, may also turn the faces of the clouds downward so that abundant rain may fall, transforming drought into greenery.
