Hadith 359

Narrated Jabir bin Samurah (RA): The Prophet (ﷺ) used to deliver the Khutbah (religious talk, sermon) while standing. He (ﷺ) would then sit down and then stand up and deliver the Khutbah in a standing posture. So, whoever informs you that he [the Prophet (ﷺ)] delivered the Khutbah (religious talk, sermon) while sitting has definitely told a lie. [Reported by Muslim].

«أخرجه مسلم، الجمعة، باب ذكر الخطبتين قبل الصلاة وما فيهما من الجلسة، حديث:862.»©Explanation:
Several rulings are established from this hadith:
➊ There are two sermons (khutbahs) for Jumu‘ah.
➋ Sitting between the two is Sunnah.
➌ The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to deliver both sermons while standing.
➍ Without a valid Shar‘i excuse, deliberately opposing any of these practices, considering it Sunnah, is an innovation (bid‘ah).
➎ It is narrated in Ibn Abi Shaybah that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, ‘Uthman, and ‘Ali (radi Allahu anhum) all used to deliver the Jumu‘ah sermon while standing.
➏ Some ahadith also establish that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), upon ascending the pulpit (minbar), would face the congregation and say: “As-salamu ‘alaykum.”
